About Chims Cabins
Located in Nuu-chah-nulth Territory on the west side of Port Alberni, Chims Cabins offers a peaceful alternative to typical Port Alberni hotels and motels.
Founded in 2018 by Naomi Nicholson, the name Chims comes from čims in the Nuu-chah-nulth Barkley dialect, meaning bear. To help with pronunciation and spelling, an “h” was added to the original word.
Originally opened as Chims Guest House, the property began with a single guest unit. As demand grew morecabins were added, creating a total of six self-contained spaces with full kitchens, private decks, and dedicated parking. With this expansion came the name Chims Cabins — reflecting the perfect mix of comfort, privacy, and convenience for travelers seeking Port Alberni accommodation close to nature and city amenities.
We’re a local, family-owned business dedicated to offering a welcoming, authentic, and Indigenous-inspired experience. Every booking directly supports our community — helping sustain local jobs, eco-friendly initiatives, and Indigenous entrepreneurship.
Naomi’s vision for Chims Cabins was influenced by her work as a Certified First Host Indigenous Customer Service Trainer, where she taught the importance of indigenizing spaces through design, language, and storytelling. Her inspiration came from destinations like Hawai‘i and Mexico, where culture and hospitality blend beautifully — a vision she brought home to Port Alberni.
Together, Naomi and her husband, Ed, built their home and expanded the property to create a quiet, forest-edge retreat just five to ten minutes from downtown Port Alberni. Whether you’re here for work, adventure, or relaxation, Chims Cabins provides a clean, comfortable, and private alternative to traditional hotels in Port Alberni.
